STOP THE DROUGHTS!
English Textbook, pages 162-163
2
Our state is currently in the middle of the third worst drought in
history. Our land is drying up. Plants and animals are dying. People must
change their behavior so that we can end this crisis soon.
3
Multiple Choice
Which picture shows drought?
4
Droughts happen when the earth is very dry. Because we depend on
the water cycle to keep the earth wet, it’s a problem when there’s
not enough rain. Things get worse when high temperatures dry out
the land fast. Plants can’t grow, and animals don’t have enough to
drink. Without them people have no food.

8
People can help lessen the effects of droughts by conserving water. WE
must always try to save water. Doing this before a problem arrives can
help an area when it is hit by a drought. Here are a few things we can
do to save water.
9
Multiple Choice
How can people lessen the effects of droughts?

by playing video games
by conserving water

*Water lawns less often.
* Don’t let faucets drip or run.

It’s essential to prepare for a drought. It’s even more important to help
keep droughts from coming in the first place. Earth is getting warmer.
Cars and smokestacks burn fossils fuels, such as coal and oil. These fuels
cause air pollution. The pollution traps heat in the atmosphere, affecting
global climate.

Multiple Choice
Which of the following shows global warming?
16
We should care about global warming because high temperatures help
cause drought. In the water cycle, the sun causes water to evaporate into
an invisible gas called water vapor. Cooler temperatures cause the vapor
to condense and form rain. In an unusually hot area, the clouds take the
water away. The water condenses and falls where the air is cooler. That
is why droughts are worse in hotter areas.

RULES for SAVING WATER
Water conservation is more important than ever in places with low
rainfall.
The
American
Southwest
has
been
suffering
from
major
droughts for years. May places have water restrictions that affect how
often people can water garden or fill their swimming pools.
Restrictions help save water for more important things, such as
drinking! Water conservation saves water for growing crops.
