The 'Online' Experience

Children are frequently exposed to a wide range of inappropriate and harmful content. These include

• Sexualised and violent imagery,

• Anonymous trolling,

• Material promoting suicide and self harming including eating disorders.

Research from the children’s commissioner has found that there are ‘serious issues’ linked to children’s exposure to pornography and the effect this has on peer-on-peer sexual violence.

In a recent review by the children’s commissioner, young people have asked that parents and teachers are more involved in their online lives and have the knowledge and tools to step in when something goes wrong.

The 4 C's of online safety

Content: Being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful content e.g. pornography, fake news, racism, misogyny, radiciaisation.

Contact: Being subjected to harmful online interactions with other users e.g. peer to peer pressure, commercial advertising, adults posing as children fro grroming (county lines, exploitation, sexual/criminal/financial purposes).

The 4 C's of online safety

• Conduct: Online behaviour that increases the likelihood of or causes harm e.g. making or sending and receiving explicit images (consensual and non-consensual sharing of nudes and semi-nudes and/or pornography, sharing explicit images and online bullying). A significant concern is revenge porn.

• Commerce: Risks such as online gambling, inappropriate advertising, phishing and/or financial scams e.g. loot boxes, scam emails
