Courtship Behavior

A behavior is the way an organism reacts to other organisms or to its
environment.

Courtship behavior is when an animal engages in different behaviors in
order to find a mate.

Behaviors are a form of communication. Animals can communicate
using sound, light, chemicals and body language.

There is a lot of competition to attract a mate. Sometimes animals
even bring gifts to each other.

Protecting Offspring

Many animals build nests and dens to protect their young.
Animals build these out of a variety of materials for protection
from predators and the environment.

Another example of a nurturing behavior is herding. This is
when large groups of animals stay together and make sure
young animals are not left behind. Elephants take turn
watching each other’s babies so the mother can take breaks!

Some animals, such as the musk oxen, circle their young with
their horns facing out to protect them from predators. Bison
form two circles – the females make a circle around the young
and the males make a circle around the females.

Animals engage in
courtship behaviors:
dancing, singing, and
fighting, to attract a mate.

This keeps their offspring
alive.
