Chapter 1 Summary

We are introduced to Buck, a 4-year-old, half St. Benard. He is taken from his idylic home with Judge Miller. Manuael, the gardner, needed money to pay his gambling debt. Meanwhile, gold is found in Canda, and dog like Buck have become a valuable resource.
