​Wind Power

Wind power comes from moving air.

Large wind turbines use the wind to spin a generator that creates electricity.

Inside the wind turbine are two long shafts that spin around.

One is a low speed shaft that the turbine spins and is connected to a gearbox.

There is also a high speed shaft that is connected to one side of the gearbox. The gearbox makes it spin faster.

The high speed shaft turns the generator.

• The wind turns the blades.

• The blades turn the low-speed shaft.

• The low speed shaft spins and is connected to the gearbox.

• The gearbox speeds up the the shaft.

• The high speed shaft now spins faster which turns the generator.

• The generator spins to make electricity.

​Wind turbines can be placed offshore. This means that they are located in the water near the land. There are usually strong wind currents located just off the coast.

​Wind turbines can be placed on land. They can be placed in locations that have strong wind currents.

​As of February 2020, there 361 onshore and 22 offshore wind turbines in Taiwan.

Currently, around 5% of electricity in Taiwan comes from wind power.
