have/get

We use the causative passive form when we want to talk about something else done for us or another person.

-I cut my hair. (This means I cut it myself).

But if I paid someone to do it, then you can say:

-A hairdresser cut my hair.

But another way is to use the causative construction: I had my hair cut.

Have + object + past participle

This has the meaning of (have something done). And often used for services.

Structure: Subject + have + object + past participle

Examples:

-We had the house painted last month.

-The school is going to have a new theatre built.

-I might have all my work finished by Friday.

-I had my house painted by some teenagers from the local school.

Have + object + past participle

We can also use it when describing something bad that had happened to us.

Example:

He had his ID stolen from his pocket.

Get + object + past participle

This has the same meaning as "have", but it's less formal (to get something done).

Structure: subject + get + object + past participle

Examples:

-Lyon got her bike fixed really quickly.

-I'll get my hair cut next week.

-The students get their essays checked.

Have sb do sth (for you)

Structure: subject + have + object [person] + infinitive without to. This have a very similar meaning to "have something done" but in this case we say who did the action.

Examples:

-I had Dad put up some shelves in my room.

-I had the electrician look at my broken light.

-The doctor will have the nurse call the patients.

Get sb to do sth (for you)

Structure: subject + get + object [person] + to + infinitive. Again, this means that you cause the other person to do the action, maybe by paying them to do it, or by asking them to do it, or by persuading them to do it.

Examples:

-My friend got me to design the invitations for the party.

-She gets her son to do the homework by promising him ice cream.

Sth needs doing/needs to be done

(need + -ing) or (need + to be + past participle)

Examples:

-I know my handwriting needs improving so I'm going to work on that.

-Fortunately, the background music doesn't need recording - he'll do that.

-There so many things that need to be done. I don't know where to start.
