28th June 1491 - Henry was born at Greenwich Palace to King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He was their second son.
2nd April 1502 - Henry's older brother Arthur dies aged just 15. Henry becomes the new heir to the throne aged just 10.
21st April 1509 - Henry's father, King Henry VII, dies, and Henry becomes King Henry VIII.
11th June 1509 - Henry marries Catherine of Aragon - his brother's widow and daughter of Spanish rulers.
24th June 1509 - Henry and Catherine are formally crowned King and Queen of England.
18th February 1516 - After many miscarriages and stillbirths, Catherine of Aragon gave birth to a baby girl: Princess Mary.

31st October 1517 - Over in what is now Germany, Martin Luther sends a letter containing his '95 Theses' (a list of 95 complaints about Catholic church doctrine and practices) to the Archbishop of Mainz. Allegedly, Luther also nailed a paper copy of the 95 Theses to the door of the cathedral in Worms, the city where he lived. This is when the Protestant Reformation officially began.
November 1518 - Henry began to have doubts about his marriage to Catherine. Catherine had been pregnant 6 times, but only one of her children had survived infancy - and it was a girl. Catherine was older than Henry, and he was beginning to think that she would never be able to give him a son.

11th-22nd June 1520 - A great summit took place to strengthen the new peace and alliance between King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France after years of warfare. This summit was a truly momentous occasion, known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold because it took place on a great field covered in tents made from golden fabric.
February 1522 - Anne Boleyn, recently returned from the French court, is given a position in the English court, as part of the Queen's household.
June 1527 - Henry sends a formal request to the Pope asking for permission to marry again for the sakes of having a male heir and send Catherine away to a convent. Unfortunately for Henry, Catherine's nephew was the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, who had a lot of power over the Pope, so the chances of the Pope giving him what he wanted were extremely slim.
