What is a rate?

Is a ratio that compares 2 quantities in different units. finding rates shows how one thing changes in term of another thing. example : If I walk 5 miles in 2 hour, Do you think that I will walk the same miles in 3 hours if I keep the same pace ?

What is a unit rate?

Rate that has a denominator of 1.

To find a unit rate, you divide both numbers by the number you want to equal 1.
  • Ex. 405 miles in 9 hours

  • Ex. 4 packs of batteries is $22.16

6

Match

Match the following with the Unit Rates

$5 for 15 gallons of gas

12 gallons of soda for $9

12\frac{1}{2} gallon of pudding for 0.50

2232\frac{2}{3} gallon of water for $3

$25 for 5 gallons of paint

$3 per gallon

$0.75 per gallon

$1.00 per gallon

$0.89 per gallon

Proportions
  • When two or more ratios are equivalent

  • "Proportional" means that both ratios should reduce to the same fraction

Steps to solving a proportion

1. Draw arrows showing which direction you will be moving. An arrow needs to be pointing to the variable.

Arrows should be on BOTH sides of the proportion going in the same direction! (Which way is easiest to go?)

14

Step 2

Find the factor needed to multiply or divide to move in the direction you chose.

You may need to simplify the ratio to find a good factor to use.

Are the arrows pointing to the larger number (MULTIPLY) or the smaller number (DIVIDE)?

15

Horizontal or Vertical

Find the scale factor you are going to use.
