ELA.10.R.2.3: Analyze an author's choices in establishing and achieving purpose(s) in historical American speeches and essays.

Clarification 1: In this grade level, students are using and responsible for the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos.

​Our Standards

​Ethos: establish trust based on who you are or what you know

Pathos: appeal to emotions (fear, anger, desire, pity....)

Logos: appeal to logic or reason

Kairos: create a sense of urgency (people think less clearly when they feel rushed)

These appeal should be used in this order to be most effective. If someone trusts you, they are more likely to allow you to hit them with the feels, and then provide them with a logical way through the situation before reminding them to hurry up and act.

​Rhetorical Appeals Review

Allusion: an indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text. Usually references to mythology, the Bible, or Shakespeare

Antithesis: contrasting ideas expressed through parallel structure (Go big or go home)
Asyndeton: omission of conjunctions (FANBOYS) (We came, we saw, we conquered)
Polysyndeton: the inclusion of multiple conjunctions (FANBOYS) (Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds)
Irony: (verbal) saying the opposite of what is meant

Rhetorical question: asking a question without wanting an answer
