Multiple Choice
What is the P in ATP?
Perennial
Phosphate
Polypeptide
Phenotype
3
Energy and ATP
• Energy comes in many forms:
– light
– thermal (heat)
– electrical
– mechanical
– nuclear
– chemical
4
Multiple Choice
Which type of energy is required for producers to go through photosynthesis?
Light
Mechanical
Nuclear
Electrical
5
Energy and ATP
• Energy can be stored in the chemical bonds of
molecules and compounds
• In living things, chemical energy is stored in the
chemical bonds of
– Carbohydrates
– Proteins
– Lipids (Fats)
6
Multiple Choice
Carbohydrates and Lipids are made of these elements:
C-H-O
C-H-O-N
C-H-O-N-P
C-H-O-N-P-Y
7
8
Multiple Choice
What percentage of energy is lost going from Trophic Level #1 to Trophic Level #2?
90%
10%
50%
.1%
9
Cells need energy
• Energy in cells is carried
in the form of ATP
• ATP = adenosine
triphosphate
10
ATP consists of:
– adenine (nitrogen base)
– ribose (a 5-carbon sugar)
– 3 phosphate groups
ATP is a type of nucleotide
Adenine
Ribose
3 Phosphate

11
Multiple Choice
What else is a type of Nucleotide?
DNA
Protein
Ribosomes
Cell Membrane
12
Where does ATP come from?
• Fooddoes not contain ATP
• Digestion breaks down food into smaller
molecules that can be used to make ATP (by the
mitochondria)
• How much ATP is made is related to the number
of Calories in the food
• # of ATP produced also depends on the type of
molecule broken down- carbohydrate, lipid or protein
13
Multiple Choice
Where is ATP made?
Ribosomes
Nucleus
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Mitochondria
14
ATP/ADP Cycle
15
Releasing Energy
●To release the energy stored in ATP molecules,
bonds between their phosphate groups are broken
through hydrolysis.
●Hydrolysis is a chemical reaction in which a water
molecule splits another molecule.
● As a result of hydrolysis, energy is released and
ATP loses a phosphate to become ADP (Adenosine
diphosphate).
16
Multiple Choice
What does Lysis mean in Greek? (Hint: Hydrolysis is splitting of molecules with a water molecule)
Releasing
Strengthen
Lengthen
Boring
17
ATP/ADP Cycle
18
Storing Energy
● Small amounts of energy can be stored in a
cell by adding phosphate groups to ADP
molecules (called phosphorylation), producing
ATP.
● ADP is constantly recombined with phosphate
groups to form new molecules of ATP to support
the work of the cell.
19
Multiple Choice
Adenosine TRIphosphate and Adenosine DIphosphate are different because...
ATP has fewer phosphates
ADP has more phosphates
ATP has more phosphates
ADP has different color phosphates
