Compound nouns

Compound nouns are nouns that are made up of two or more words that are used together to express a single idea or concept.

There are three types of compound nouns:

Closed or solid compound nouns:

Hyphenated compound nouns:

1. These are compound nouns that are written with a hyphen between the words that make it up. For example, "well-being," "mother-in-law," "six-pack," "jack-o'-lantern."

Open compound nouns:

1. These are compound nouns that are written as two separate words without any hyphens or spaces between them. For example, "post office," "ice cream," "high school," "parking lot."

Compound nouns can be formed in various ways, including noun + noun (e.g. "bookstore"), adjective + noun (e.g. "blackboard"), noun + verb (e.g. "sunrise"), preposition + noun (e.g. "underground"), and more complex combinations.
