Learn several ways to solve multiplication problems that have three factors.

We can only multiply two factors at a time, so first you have to pair two of the factors and find their product.

• Then you have a new problem with only two factors, and you can multiply again.

• But these factors are all the same, so there is more than one way to find the product.

Commutative Property of Multiplication

Notice that the factors are the same but in a different order. Also, the products are the same. 8 times 4 equals 4 times 8.

• Changing the order of the factors in a multiplication problem does not change the product. This is called Commutative Property.

When we choose two factors to multiply first, we're grouping them together.

• In the first problem, the 2 and the 3 are grouped.

• If you change the grouping in a multiplication problem, you still get the same product. This is called Associative Property of Multiplication.

• To show grouping, we usually use parentheses. They tell which factors to multiply first.
