We can only multiply two factors at a time, so first you have to pair two of the factors and find their product.
Then you have a new problem with only two factors, and you can multiply again.
2 x 2 x 2
4 x 2

Solving a Three- Factor Problem
We can only multiply two factors at a time.
But these factors are all the same, so there is more than one way to find the product.
2 x 3 x 2

Commutative Property of Multiplication
Notice that the factors are the same but in a different order. Also, the products are the same. 8 times 4 equals 4 times 8.
Changing the order of the factors in a multiplication problem does not change the product. This is called Commutative Property.
4 x 2 x 4

When we choose two factors to multiply first, we're grouping them together.
In the first problem, the 2 and the 3 are grouped.
If you change the grouping in a multiplication problem, you still get the same product. This is called Associative Property of Multiplication.
To show grouping, we usually use parentheses. They tell which factors to multiply first.
2 x 3 x 4
