Our lesson on fractions

How one fraction is equal to another.

2

How is 1/2 equal to 2/4?

1/2 is equal to 2/4 because 1/2 x 2 = 2/4. If you multiply 1 by 2, your answer will be 2. And if you multiply 2 by 2, your answer will be 4.

1/2 x 4 = 4/8

1/2 x 5 = 5/10

1/2 x 3 = 3/6

In all of these, the bottom number is always double the amount of the top number. This means the top is 1/2 of the bottom.

Multiplying by a whole.

Multiply 1/2 by a whole number.

Multiply 1/2 by a whole number is writen like this. 2 x 1/2. This is not how you solve it. 2/2 is equal to 1. So the first step is to make it look like this. 2/2 x 1/2. This makes it look a little confusing, but solving it is much easier. All you do is multiply the top and bottom of the fraction by 2! Therefore, the answer is 2/4.
