Well Done! Let's continue our lesson on note values...
13
Reading Notes on the Staff
When reading rhythms on the staff, we use the counting system. (i.e. 1-2-3-4)
When we are in a 4/4 time signature, we always have 4 beats in a measure.
14
Reading Notes on the Staff
For example, if the rhythm in the measure looks like this:
Then the numbers will be 1-2-3-4 because they each get one beat.
15
Reading Notes on the Staff
Now, if we are using a half note (2 beats) in our rhythm, then we will need to change our counting.
This rhythm, will be counted as 1--3-4, because we do not count on the second beat.
16
Hearing the Rhythms
Click on the rhythms to hear what they sound like:
17
Using Eighth Notes
When we use an eighth note (1/2 beat) we use a number (1, 2, 3, or 4) if the note falls on the down beat, and an & (and) if the note falls on the up beat.
18
Using Eighth Notes
Listen to the following rhythms:
19
Rests are notations in music that produce NO sound. Every rest has a regular note that it is connected to (such as quarter note and quarter rest).

Now that we have mastered rhythms, let's move on to pitches!
26
Every note has its own letter that identifies its pitch. These letters include only the alphabet from A-G before repeating back to A.

Rather than using letters as we sing, we use Solfege. These symbols take the place of the letters in order to help us hear the relationship between the notes.
