except….. Colonies are seen kinda as a bad thing

• Resources could be taken

• Social Darwinism

• Created borders of modern

countries without regard to
culture.

Differences

●Was legally meant to be
temporary.

●Not a competition between
European countries

●Could not make locals into
soldiers.

Do we remember Social Darwinism?

Social Darwinism: belief that white
people were the most civilized (smarter,
stronger, harder worker) and could do

what they wanted to weaker

countries/people.

3. Self-Determination vs Colonies/Mandates

•New European countries got self-determination

•France and Britain did not give up colonies.

•Japan asked for a “statement of racial equality” and was
denied at the Conference

Why weren’t the colonies and mandates allowed
self-determination? Use the word social
Darwinism in your answer.

Self-Determination: allowing a Nation to choose their
government and have a country of their own. Colonies
and Mandates were not allowed it.

4. Balfour Declaration (1917)

Many European Jews wanted
self-determination.

Britain promised British Zionists a
Jewish country in Palestine.

Zionism: The belief that the Jewish

people should have a legal
homeland in the lands around
Jerusalem.

The Document is a copy of the “Balfour
Declaration”, sent by British Foreign
Secretary James Balfour to a group called
the “Zionist Federation of Great Britain
and Ireland”. This telegram was sent
during the war after advocates for Jewish
emigration to Palestine petitioned the
British government for support.
