Light is electromagnetic energy that is produced by the sun in different wavelengths-all of them traveling at about the same speed.

What is light?

We are able to see some light waves but there are a lot which we cannot see like microwaves and radio waves.

Light waves that we can see is called visible light. and consists of the colors of the rainbow.

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet

Daylighting is a tool that designers can use to save their clients money in energy costs while enhancing the wellbeing of the occupants.

Daylighting makes strategic use of windows and skylights.

Natural Light

Artificial lights are man made light sources that provide:

• ambient/general lighting

• task lighting

• accent/decorative lighting

Kelvin is a unit of thermodynamic temperature.

The higher the value in Kelvins, the cooler the light looks.

​Selecting the right light bulb is a critical piece of the design puzzle. A warm light with a 2,200K color temperature can make a cool marble slab or white wall look like a completely different color under a fixture with a 7000K color temperature.

What does light do to the color of interior finishes?

Now let's look at our bulb options.

When a designer selects light fixtures, they also need to give care to the selection of the bulbs, or lamps, as they are sometimes called.

Today, we are going to only look at 4 main types of bulbs.

Electric light with a tungsten wire filament that is heated until it glows.

Incandescent Bulbs

A tube filled with mercury vapor that when heated produces light

Fluorescent Bulbs

A spiral tube filled with mercury vapor that when heated produces light

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL)

LEDs work when electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs and the result is visible light.

What do designers need to know about how much light to provide and where to place fixtures?

Layering Light

​Lighting that illuminates the entire room and meets most of the light needs for the whole room.

General Lighting

​Lighting that is used for a specific purpose or task like reading, working, or cooking. It will not generally light up the entire room on its own.

Task Lighting

​Lighting used to highlight objects or paintings or to emphasize an area. This lighting is mostly decorative.
