Flat bottom Hull advantages: planning hull w/ shallow draft; good for fishing in small lakes
Disadvantages: rides roughly in choppy waters
Deep Vee Hull advantages: planning hull gives smoother ride in rough water
Disadvantages: takes more power to move; may roll or bank in sharp turns

Round bottom hull advantages: typical displacement hull that moves easily thru water even at slow speeds
Disadvantages: has a tendency to roll unless it has a deep keel or stabilizers
Multi-hull advantages: has a greater stability b/c of a wide beam
Disadvantages: Needs a larger area when turning

Know your boat length classes
Vessels divided into classes by LENGTH which dictates equipment necessary to comply with federal and state laws. Length is measured from tip of bow in straight line to the stern

Four most common length classes are:
-Less than 16 feet (class A)
-16 feet to less than 26 feet (Class 1)
-26 feet to less than 40 feet (Class 2)
-40 feet to less than 65 feet (Class 3)

Know your boat engine types- Stern Drives
-Known as inboard/outboards (I/O), combine features found on both
-Mounted inside vessel and attached thru transom to drive unit
-Four-cycle automotive engines adapted for marine use
-Steering controlled by drive unit that swivels like outboard

Know your boat engine types- Jet Drives
May power larger vessels- commonly used for vessels designed for shallow water conditions. Jet boats can have inboard or outboard jet drives

Before you get underway: Capacity
-Never take a vessel on the water with too many people or too much gear onboard. Vessels loaded beyond capacity will more easily swamp or capsize.
Capacity plate is located near the operater's position or on the transom

Float Plan
For shorter daylight outings, at minimum you should;
You should inform a responsible person of:
-Where you are boating and when you are returning
- Contact the local authorities if you are overdue
Contact this person again when you return or if you decide to extend your trip

For extended outings, leave a float plan with someone. Your float plan should:
Describe your vessel, its number, size, make, horsepower and engine type
Lists where you are going, detailed route, and your expected return time

Give number of passengers, thier names, their addresses, and a contact in case of emergency
Include the description and license plate of tow vehicle and trailer
