SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts In the earth’s stratosphere
Climate change is affecting all countries on all continents. It is distressing national economies and affecting life with a high cost for people communities and countries. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, weather events are becoming more and more extreme and greenhouse gas emissions are now at the highest levels in history.
2
The warming of the earth’s atmosphere is causing changes in the global climate system and this threatens the livelihoods of large sections of the population in less developed countries.
Without action, the average surface temperature of the world is likely to raise by 3 degrees Celsius by the end of this century. The poorest and most vulnerable people are the most affected.
3
Changes in precipitation and temperature are affecting ecosystems such as forests, agricultural land, mountain regions and oceans, as well as the fauna, the flora and the people in those areas.
The pace of change is accelerating and for this reason more and more people turn to renewable energy, take measures to reduce emissions and increase adaptation efforts. It is important to stress that climate change is a global challenge that does not respect national borders.
4
Targets by 2030:
Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
Improve education and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries.
