What are metaphors, similes, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, and repetition?

Imagery
Definition: highly descriptive language that stimulates the reader's senses.
NOT figurative language, but often contains figurative language.
Example:
“The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight.

Simile
Definition: A way of comparing two things using like or as.
Example:
The stars sparkled above us like precious jewels.

Metaphor
Definition: A way of comparing two things WITHOUT using like or as.
Example:
The eyes are the window to the soul.

Personification
Definition: Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.
Example:
The wind whistled a tune outside the
window all throughout the day.

Hyperbole
Definition: Exaggeration for effect.
Hyper = excessive.
Example:
On our fishing trip, I caught
the world's biggest fish.

Alliteration
Definition: Use of the same sound or letter at the beginning of words.
Example:
The rushing river twister through
the rugged rocks.

Definition: repeating words or phrases to emphasize an idea.
Example:
It's okay not to be okay.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.
