Cell Types and Cell Theory Guided Notes

​There are two types of cells:

• Prokaryotes

• Eukaryotes​

​Prokaryotes

• ​Prokaryotic means " before nucleus" in Greek.

• ​Do NOT have a nucleus.

• Circular DNA that floats freely in the cell.

• No membrane bound organelles.

• Typically smaller than eukaryotic cells.

• Unicellular, meaning one cell.

• Aerobic or anaerobic, meaning some can live without oxygen.

​Eukaryotes

• ​Eukaryotic means " true nucleus" in Greek.

• ​Have a nucleus.

• Have membrane bound organelles.

• Typically much larger than prokaryotic cells.

• Multicellular, meaning more than one cell,

  but can be unicellular.

• Aerobic meaning most need oxygen to survive.
