The Dangers of a Declining Bee Population

Open your books to page 35.

16

Bee populations across the world have dropped significantly, and this is a serious problem. These insects play a very important role in food supply because they pollinate fruits and vegetables. Without bees to pollinate plants, food will be extremely difficult to produce. One of the biggest causes of this decline in bee populations is pesticides.

17

Bees come in contact with the poison and either die immediately or, even worse, carry it back to the beehive where it could cause permanent damage. A long-term solution is for farmers and gardeners to find alternatives to the dangerous pesticides that are used on their crops and gardens. Many natural substances, such as oil and soap sprays, can do the same job as chemical products. In addition, beehives can be placed closer to food crops.

18

The less distance a bee has to travel, the less chance there is of its injury or death since bees have very fragile wings. Whichever action is chosen, something needs to be done now to prevent bees from becoming extinct.
