A linear equation is solved by isolating, and then solving for x. To isolate x, we can add, subtract, multiply, or divide both sides of the equation.

When we subtract or add a number on one side, we have to do it on both sides. This is called the addition property of equality, and the subtraction property of equality.

When we multiply or divide a number on one side, we have to do it on both sides.
This is called the multiplication property of equality, and the division property of equality.
