Unit 6 - Vocabulary
People in different countries celebrate Mardi Gras with live music, costumes, fireworks, parades and lots of good food. The most famous celebrations are in New Orleans, Venice, Rio de Janero and Port-of-Spain.
In New Orleans, Mardi Gras began in the 1700s. By the 1800s they were huge events with masks, costumes and jazz bands.
In Venice, Mardi Gras is called Carnivale. The first celebrations were in the 11th century and it is still a big celebration today. Visitors to the city can enjoy the costumes, candles and fireworks at night from a gondola in Venice's canals.
In Rio de Janeiro the world famous parades started in the mid-1800s, with decorated floats and thousands of people dancing to samba music. People eat a famous meat and bean stew called feijoada.
Port-of-Spain in Trinidad started Mardi Gras after the arrival of the French in the 18th century. Nowaday, everyone enjoys the parties adn concerts with the famous steel drums playing from morning to midnight.

mask: something you wear on your face that hides part or all of your face
band: a group of musicians playing together
firework: a device that explodes and makes a pretty display
parade: a group of people moving through the streets to entertain people watching
candle: a wax stick that has a flame on one end
gondola: a boat used in Venice that moves by pushing the bottom of the canal with a long pole
float: a mobile platform that is decorated and moves down the street during a parade
drum: an instrument you play by hitting it
