Aksara dan abjad Bugis-Makassar

Akasara Bugis-Makassar disebut sebagai aksara lontara karena konon pada awal mulanya yang digunakan sebagai media untuk menulis adalah daun lontara dan sebagai alat penulis adalah kallang yang diambil dari pohon ijuk atau enau.

Akasara lontara tidak berupa fonem melainkan berupa simbol (suku- kata) yang terdiri dari 23 macam aksara sebagai ina’ sure’ ( induk huruf)

Selain ina sure tersebut di atas juga ada 5 macam tanda pembeda (diakritik) yang disebut sebagai ana’ sure’ (anak huruf). Ana’ sure’ ini terdiri dari 2 macam bentuk yaitu bentuk tetti’ (.) dan bentuk kecce’ ( e….., …….. o dan ……E ). Anak sure berupa tetti’ diletakkan pada posisi di atas atau di bawah ana sure’, sedangkan ana’ sure’ yang berupa kecce’ diletakkan pada posisi di depan (kecce’ ri yolo) atau di belakang (kecce, ri munri) aatau di atas (kecce ri yase’)pada tiap-tiap ina sure’.
