Both articles report that E. coli infections linked to raw flour sickened 63 people in 2016. How do the articles differ in their interpretation of this fact?

2

Article 1 reassures readers that by those numbers, only one in five million Americans actually became ill from raw flour. By doing this, the article seems to minimize the dangers posed by E. coli from raw flour. To the contrary, Article 2 does nothing to minimize these dangers. Instead, it uses this fact to urge readers to check the flour in their pantry and throw it away if it could possibly be linked to a recall.

Which article would be more useful to someone who believes they may be ill after eating raw cookie dough? Explain your answer using evidence from the article.

4

EITHER can be argued as long as sufficient evidence is presented. Examples:

Article 2, “Say No to Raw Dough,” would be more useful to someone who believes they may be ill after eating raw cookie dough because it includes a thorough list of guidelines to follow when cooking dough. The reader might find one of his mistakes here. It also provides in-depth symptoms for both Salmonella and E. coli, including the number of days before getting ill and common symptoms.

Article 1, “Don’t Eat the Dough,” would be more useful to someone who believes they may be ill after eating raw cookie dough because it includes the diagram on the second page, “Salmonellosis Signs and Symptoms.” The reader can compare his symptoms with the ones presented here.
