The first battle of the Texas Revolution happened at Gonzales, Texas. Mexican soldiers had come to the town to collect a cannon that the settlers had there. The Texans refused to give up their cannon, and challenged the Mexican soldiers with a flag that read “Come and Take It”. When the Mexican soldiers attacked, the Texans fired their cannon and forced the soldiers to retreat.
One week later, the Texans captured the Mexican garrison at Goliad, defeating Mexican General Martin Perfecto de Cos [who retreated his men to San Antonio].

Fighting in the Texas Revolution had begun, but the Texan’s goals were unclear. Some Texans wanted independence from Mexico. Others wanted to remain a part of Mexico, but they didn’t like the leadership of Santa Anna.

The two sides agreed on a compromise, in which each side gives up something it wants. They decided that they would fight, but NOT for independence. Instead, they’d be fighting to get the Mexican Constitution of 1824 put back into use throughout all of Mexico.
They set up a new ad interim [temporary] Texas government. David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala would serve as temporary President and Vice President. Sam Houston would be in charge of the Texas army [which was difficult to create with no money to pay for it].
