Kids Encyclopedia Facts. A territory (plural: territories, from the word terra, which means 'land') is an area which belongs to a person, organization, institution, animal, nation or state. In international law, a "territory" is an area of land which is outside the borders of a nation, but owned by that nation.​

​There are 3 types of territories: personal territory, community territory, and free territory.

​Personal territory: Personal territory is controlled individually or in groups. Group members are members who have a very close relationship such as a relationship due to marriage or relationships due to blood ties.

​​Community territory: This territory is controlled by the general public and is

open to the public, including public places such as a highway, and also places

that are not public property such as waiting rooms in terminals, performance

halls in theaters and so on. Prohibition and control are less free than previous

types of ownership. This is done through rules or norms that come from the

community, these regulations can be based on gender differences, age

differences, or racial differences.

​​Free territory: This territory has no permanent residents, and the subject's existence is not under the prohibition or control of certain parties.

​A continent is a large solid area of land. Earth has seven continents.

​A country is land that is controlled by a single government. Countries are also called nations, states, or nation-states. Countries can be large or small. Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Russia, and the United States are large countries spread over millions of square miles. Countries are found in continents.

​Currency is the official money of a country. It consists of paper money and coins. Each country has its own form of currency, which is overseen by the central bank of that country.

​In most countries around the world, a city or other area is designated as the capital—the headquarters of the national government. The country's leaders, such as a president, prime minister, king, or queen; its legislature; and its highest court generally reside there.

​ Then the cities are found in the countries. Villages and towns are found in the cities and neighborhoods, streets and roads are found in the villages and towns.

​A nation is a unified territorial state with a political system that governs the whole society. A nation may be very large with several political subdivisions—such as the United States, China, Canada, or Australia—or it may be a small unit like the city-state of Singapore.

​A person's nationality tells which country that person (called a national) is from. But nationals from a certain country are not always citizens of that country. They may have gained citizenship in another country..
