* often located in the first or last sentence of a paragraph

* the title can help you understand what the main idea may be

* all information in the paragraph should relate to the main idea

Main Idea & Details

When you read a story or passage, there is a lot of information to remember. The small pieces of information you read are called details. What the passage (or part of the passage) is mostly about is the main idea/central idea.

Bats

Some kind of bats eat many insects. Some bats can eat up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour. Bats are helpful to the environment. Bats help us by eating insects. Without bats, we would have too many insects.

Relative Pronouns

A relative pronoun is one which is used to refer to nouns mentioned previously, whether they are people, places, things, animals, or ideas.

These pronouns allow us to staple phrases together.

These are the 5 most common relative pronouns.

• who - refers to the person that is the SUBJECT in the sentence (who the whole sentence is about)

• whom - refers to a person in the sentence that IS NOT the subject

• whose - possesive form of who, shows ownership of something

• that - We use that to refer to animals, things, and groups

• which - We use which to refer to animals, things, and groups

  We never use which when talking about people

  Which gives extra information about the sentence

WHO

who is used when it is the subject of the sentence

Who owns this pencil? Who won the game? Who wants pizza for lunch?

Trick!

restate the sentence as a question and if you answer it with he/she the relative pronoun is who!

​answer it: He/she is my best friend. If it is he/she, then WHO is the correct relative pronoun

WHOM

should be used to refer to the object of a verb or preposition

​If you ask the statement as a question and the answer would be him/her it is whom!

Simple Subject & Predicate Complete Subject & Predicate

REMEMBER, a sentence has two main parts:

The subject is always a noun and the predicate is always a verb.

​Simple Subject

• ​is not modified (does not have extra detail)

​Complete Subject

• ​is a noun (person, place, thing or idea)

• ​includes the main subject of the sentence

• ​is modified (it provides more detail)

• usually is two or more words

​Simple Predicate

• ​is not modified (it does not provide details)

• Usually is one word.​

​Complete Predicate

• ​is a verb (action/being word)

• ​is modified (provides details about the verb)

• usually is made up of two or more words​

Punctuating Dialogue

"Put your name on your paper," said Mrs. Cook.

​The comma goes inside the quotation marks.

Situation Two - Dialogue Tag Comes Last

When the dialogue tag comes last, the comma goes INSIDE the quotation.

"Probably just another trick," Doc Smith replied.

"Hey, that's not fair," Vinny complained.

"Please stay in your seat," the teacher said.
