The Present Perfect

Is a verb tense that we use to talk about things we have done up to now. These experiences are perceived as finished. Although it is called the present perfect, the situations and experiences that we will talk about began in the past - perhaps they ended in the past, or perhaps they continue up to the present.

  • I have watched that movie.

  • She has lived here since she was little.

This tense has past time reference and a perfect aspect!

3

How do we create the Present Perfect?

In affirmative sentences

To create the Present Perfect tense, we use the present form of the verb have + the past participle (or -ed form) of the main verb.

  • He has worked as a teacher.

  • We have listened to music.

  • They have learnt this topic already.

REMEMBER: I/you/we/they have - He/she/it has.

4

We use have + person + -ed form.

  • Has she seen this?

  • Have you ever travelled to Europe?

In interrogative sent.

We use have + not + -ed form.

  • I have not done my homework.

  • He hasn't heard this song.

In negative sent.

Have been vs. Have gone

Both been and gone are past form of the verb go. However, they both have different meanings.

  • been is used when someone visited a place and returned.

    I have been to Italy.

  • gone is used when the person has not returned yet.

Mom has gone to the store.
