​John Marshall

​President John Adams nominated then-Secretary of State John Marshall to the Supreme Court. Following the principle of checks and balances, his nomination was sent to the Senate. The Senate confirmed his appointment, and he received his commission as the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1801. He served as Chief Justice until he died in 1835.

John Marshall held strong federalist beliefs. He shaped the court’s decisions and dramatically increased its power through a series of Landmark Supreme Court decisions.

Marbury vs Madison--Established judicial review; the right of the Supreme Court to declare a law of Congress unconstitutional

McCulloch vs Maryland--Under the "implied powers" section of the Constitution, the Court held the federal government had the right to create a bank and that states could not tax it.

Gibbons vs Ogden--When states traded with each other (interstate commerce) and there was a dispute, the federal government would intervene and federal law would decide the case.​
