During National Hispanic Heritage Month, people honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanics. This special celebration began as a weeklong event in 1968. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a month. The beginning date, September 15, is significant because it is the day many Central American countries observe their independence, including Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Hispanics make up the largest minority group in the United States. In 2019, there were more than 60,000,000 Hispanics living in the country. From entertainers like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin to Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Hispanics contribute to every aspect of American life.

Each year, there is a different theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Past themes have included “Shaping the Bright Future of America,” “One Endless Voice to Enhance Our Traditions,” and “A History of Serving Our Nation.” This year's theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is "Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation".

Many people and organizations host events to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Many of these events are free and include Hispanic art, food, dancing, literature, and other cultural elements. Some museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, hold special exhibits that celebrate Hispanic heritage.
