​When you need to use the phrase THERE IS or THERE ARE at the beginning of a sentence, you have to pay attention to the NOUN that comes after the phrase.

Example:

There is a gray cat sleeping in the park.

There are several children running during recess. ​

​If the noun is singular, use THERE IS. If the noun is plural use THERE ARE.

Use ARE when you are talking about "a lot of" something.

A lot of means "muchos" or "muchas".​

There are A LOT OF students in the cafeteria. ​

• There are a kitchen, a bedroom and a living room in my apartment.

The sentence above is incorrect. Why? Remember that you use IS before a singular noun. In the sentence, the word "kitchen" is singular. Yes, there is a list of three rooms and that is plural, but the noun that comes after THERE ARE is singular: kitchen. The correct sentence is:

There is a kitchen, a bedroom and a living room in my apartment. ​
