The basic way to respond:

Son las cinco = It's 5 o'clock

Son las ocho = It's eight o'clock

But there's one exception...

When it's 1 o'clock, we use "es"

• Es la una = It's 1 o'clock​

Adding the minutes

When adding minutes, we use "y." This means "and." We are adding on the minutes. ​

Son las nueve y cuarenta y dos.

15 and 30

When the minutes are 15 or 30, there are other ways to say this besides quince and treinta

15 and 30

We can use cuarto for 15 minutes (think quarter after)

9:15 = Son las nueve y cuarto

OR Son las nueve y quince​

15 and 30

We can use media for 30

10:30 = Son las diez y media

OR Son las diez y treinta​
