• Adjectives describe nouns.

Rule 1: In English, adjectives come before the noun that they describe. However, in Spanish, they come after the noun.

***Exception: Some Spanish adjectives can change the meaning of the noun depending on if they are placed before or after the noun. ***

Rule 2: Adjectives agree with nouns in gender (feminine or masculine ending and number (singular or plural)

Singular M Plural M

Un lapiz (m) amarillo Los lapices (m) amarillos.

A yellow pencil. The yellos pencils.

Singular F Plural F

Una camisa (f) amarilla Las camisas (f) amarillas.​

​ A yellow shirt. ​ The yellow shirts.

​EXCEPTIONS

​

Gender Exceptions:

• Adjectives that end in -e,-l, -ista, and -z do not change. Adjectives ending in -or, -on, and -in change by adding on an -a

  ​

​ Un caballo cafe- a brown horse Un carro azul= a blue car

​

Number Exceptions:

• Adjectives that end in -z change to -ces.

• Chico feliz=1 happy​ boy Chicos felices= more than one happy boys.
