• In our previous lesson, you learned about how the ideas of new imperialism and the forces of nationalism, liberalism, industrialism and social protests, gradually transformed the social-political and economic landscape of Europe from the 18th and 19th centuries. The tide of nationalism which swept through Europe gave rise to new key players like Germany and Italy and challenged the power of long-standing empires such as Russia, the Ottoman, and Austria together with Great Britain and France. The new world order towards the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries led to crucial events which would lead to the outbreak of the modern world's biggest conflict at the time: The First World War.
