Yemen was previously colonized ​by both the Ottoman Empire, and British.

But after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 (​Got stomped in WW1), North Yemen, where the Ottomans held control, became Independent and later became known as the Yemen Arab Republic or YAR.

​The British held control over South Yemen, but left in 1967, and the south ended up becoming the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, or PDRY.

The Yemeni people have little to no rights at all! They are not respected by their government!

​The government is not open about its operations, the education systems have been skewed to promote differing almost radical political ideologies, there is no freedom of assembly, and there is a lingering threat of death or imprisonment for any brave enough to protest the corrupt government

​Yemen is ranked 3rd place for "Worst place to be a woman"

This is important because Yemen has ranked low for the past 13 years, but the government has done nothing.​

​The significance of USAID is that it has donated over 561 million dollars to Yemen! This has helped create job and education opportunities for women and young girls.

​The war is being fought by the Houthi rebels (who are backed by Iran) and the Yemeni International Government.

This conflict is important as it puts a lot of women and young girls in danger and distress, as the men of the household are fighting in the war.

Women have no real domestic, national, or regional power to influence policy to empower their political, economic, and social role​

​Women also hold fewer than 20 percent of executive positions in the country!

​Yemen's youth with males enrolled in primary school at 79 percent and females at 66 percent.

​Approximately 70% of Yemen's population lives in rural areas. School accessibility is difficult in rural places. To get to the nearest school, some pupils must walk for more than an hour. Because some schools do not offer both elementary and secondary education, the distance grows longer as students progress through the grades. In order for girls to attend lessons, schools must be within a culturally acceptable distance and location.
