Instructions: In your group discuss what to bring in the four possible scenarios. Pick only three things and justify your answer.

Preparation: 3 minutes

Presentation: 3 minutes ​

1. going bowling: bowling ball, pizza, bowling shoes, bowling pins, soda, music

2. going camping: tent, sleeping bag, frisbee, firewood, s’mores, matches

3. things to bring to school: bookbag, homework, lunch, pencils, paper, iPad

4. making an ice cream sundae: ice cream, bowl, sprinkles, ice cream scoop, hot fudge, cherry

When you pour the hot water and spaghetti into the strainer, the water slips through the holes, leaving only the noodles behind.

In the same way, when we read, our brain is like that strainer.  We keep only the important things and let everything else strain out.

How are you going to identify significant details?

1. Read the text and identify the main idea.

2. Find the details that support the main idea.

Ask yourself: 

Do I need this detail to understand the main idea? 

If the answer is yes, it is a significant detail.

Does this detail give me more information about a significant detail? 

If the answer is yes, then it is an interesting detail. 

Why identify significant details?

Being able to recognize the significant details helps us find and understand the main idea of the text.

Interesting details can distract from the main idea. 

Sorting significant details from interesting details helps us to stay focused on the main idea.
