Atomic Models
J.J Thompson eventually proposed the ‘plum pudding’ model of the atom which suggested electrons were scattered throughout matter like raisins in a bun. His model, however, was insufficient in accounting for the behaviour of matter under certain conditions.
Ernest Rutherford later proposed the planetary model of the atom which is the current model being used. Rutherford’s model was very useful; however he could not explain two key facts about his model. These were later explained by two scientists, Niels Bohr and James Chadwick who explained why electrons remained orbiting the nucleus and the existence of neutrons respectively.
