Decimals

A decimal can name part of a whole or part of a group. A decimal can have a whole number part and a decimal part that are separated by a decimal point.​

Example: 5.89 is a whole number mixed with a ​decimal

5 is the whole number and .89 is a decimal​

Decimal Place value

The decimal will separate the whole numbers and the decimals. The whole numbers are to the left of the ​decimal point and the decimals are to the right.

Decimal Place Value

Place values in decimals follow the same base-ten system as whole numbers. Each place has 10 times the value of the place to its right.

1 tenths = 10 hundredths

1 one = 10 tenths

​When you put a 0 to the right of the last digit of a decimal, it does not change the value.

0.1 = 0.10 and 0.5 = 0.50​

Sometime you will have a whole number and a decimal. Each filled 100 block will be 1 whole. While the partial block will be a decimal.​

Example. To the right we see 1 whole​ block 8 ten blocks and 1 single block so the number would be 1.81

Decimal Number Lines

Step 1​

Decide what each mark on the number line represents​

Step 2

​Each line on the number line is one tenth (0.1)

The decimal is in between the numbers 1 and 2 so it has to be greater than 1 and less than 2. So our number must have a 1 in the ones place.​

Count the places after 1. Remember each number after 1 is in the tenths place

Number Line Hundredths

Step 1

Identify what we are counting by. The letter J is between 2.10 and 2.20. So we have to be counting by less than a tenth. In this case we are counting by hundredths​

The number has to be greater than 2.10 so we will count up from 2.10 until we reach J​
