三国时期，有一年，曹操得到一头大象，他十分高兴，带领文武百官和才五六岁的小儿子曹冲一同去看。这头大象又高又大，谁有办法称出有多重呢？大臣们议论开了，想了许多办法，但是都行不通。

这时，小曹冲跑了出来对曹操说：“爸爸，我有个办法，曹操一听儿子的主意连连叫好，马上吩咐左右在河岸上准备一艘大船和许多石头。大象被牵到船上。等船身稳定后、曹冲在船舷齐水的地方，刻了一道痕迹。

然后把大象牵回岸上，把大大小小的石头装到船里，沉到和那条痕迹同样高的地方才停止装载。小曹冲说：“只要把船里的石头搬回地上称一下，不就可以知道大象有多种了吗”难题就这样解决了，大家都在心底里称赞他聪明。
