For Example:

These terms are in the "wrong" places

​​7x + 13 = 2x + 28

So bring them to the opposite side

​​7x - 2x = -13 + 28

​

(But don't forget to switch their signs upon doing so)​

Simplify.

​​5x = 15

​

Divide both sides of the equation by the variable's coefficient.

Simplify again.

​​x = 3

​

When the equation looks like this:

9x - 14 = 40

​

It can be done in "two steps"

Preferably mentally.​

The same rules apply.
