• ​As the United States grew, the South wanted to expand slavery, but the North wanted to abolish it.

• The country was in crisis!​

• Created by Lincoln, it helped over 4 million freed slaves after the war

• Slavery had been going on for over 200 years at this point! ​

• Built hospitals

• Provided food

• Built over 1,000 schools and colleges

• This provided money to states for building universities ​that were for everyone no matter their skin tone

• Prior to the Civil War, there were very few colleges for black people.
