Critical Incident Technique

According to Flanagan (1954) critical incident technique is a set of procedures for collecting direct observations of human behavior in such a way as to facilitate their potential usefulness in solving practical problems and developing broad psychological principles.

The critical incident technique outlines procedures for collecting observed incidents having special significance and meeting systematically defined criteria.

Critical incident technique involves the study of critical incidents - or significant instances of a specific activity - as experienced or observed by the research participants.​

​Is this incident categorized as critical?

An incident is critical if it makes a ‘significant’ contribution, either positively or negatively to the general aim of the activity’ and it should be capable of being critiqued or analysed’. (Flanagan, 1954, p. 338)

Three parts of information about critical incident:

According to Brannick, Levine, and Morgeson (2007) there are three part of information that should included in critical incident:

1. A statement of what led up to the behavior or the problem.

2. The employee behavior.

3. The consequences of the behavior.
