Spain had recently legalized slavery in their colonies and planned to sell the Cubans.

To prevent people from helping the Cuban rebels who were attacking Spanish owned properties.

They wanted the Cuban people to learn to speak English.

They blamed Spain for attacks on Washington, D.C.

Americans hated the Spanish for their refusal to sell Florida in the early 1800s.

They sympathized with their desire for independence & freedom from a colonial power.

It would help them sell more newspapers

Spain had denied freedom of the press for years

Spain had denied multiple American newspaper publishers the right to invest in Spanish newspapers.

To help the Cuban rebels defeat Spain

To protect Americans citizens and property in the region

To help the U.S. military take over the island from both Cuban rebels and Spain
