​When writing a narrative text, you can give your reader hints about a character or setting by choosing specific words to describe them

​Read the description of this teenage boy.

​Eragon was fifteen, less than a year from manhood. Dark eyebrows rested above his intense brown eyes. His clothes were worn from work. A hunting knife with a bone handle was sheathed at his belt, and a buckskin protected his yew bow from the mist. He carried a wood-frame pack.

​Writers can reveal more about a character by showing how they behave when they are with other characters. This adds depth and detail.

​Read the following extract from the same book. Here, Eragon meets an adult called Sloan. How do the two characters get along? Note down all the words that show the feelings and reactions to each other

​He had never liked Sloan. The butcher always treated him with disdain, as if he were something unclean. A widower, Sloan seemed to care for only one person- his daughter, Katrina, on whom he doted.

‘I’m amazed,’ said Sloan with affected astonishment. He turned his back on Eragon to scrape something off the wall. ‘And that’s your reason for coming here?’

‘Yes,’ admitted Eragon uncomfortably

​Look back at the list of adjectives you used to describe the boy in question 1. write a list of the opposites of the words you have used. For example, if you said the boy was ‘brave’, the opposite would be ‘cowardly’. If you said the boy was ‘strong’, the opposite would be ‘weak’. Include contrasting words for his physical appearance as well as his character.
