Lesson 2.8 - 2.9
Y-intercept and Slope Intercept Form

By Reed Carbone

2

Definitions:

Y-Intercept: Graphically, the y-intercept is the point where your line crosses the y-axis. It is represented by the variable 'b' and is the coordinate (0,b)

Slope Intercept Form: The equation of any line can be represented by y = mx + b where x and y are your coordinates, m is your slope and b is the y-intercept.

Initial Value: Another name for y-intercept.

How to find the y-intercept: Graphically

media

Locate where the line crosses the y-axis (vertical axis).

5

How to find the y-intercept: Coordinates

(1,5), (2,8), (3,11), (4,14), (0,2)

To find the y-intercept as coordinates, we will look for when the x-coordinate is 0. Its' y-coordinate will be the y-intercept.

Multiple Choice

Question image

What is the y-intercept?

1

b = -4

2

b = 4

3

b = 6

4

b = -6

7

Multiple Choice

What is the y-intercept given the following coordinates?

(2,6), (4,12), (6,18), (0,0)

1

b = 6

2

b = 12

3

b = 18

4

b = 0

8

How to identify the slope and y-intercept from an equation:

y = 0.5x - 2

Step 1: Make sure equation is in slope intercept form, y = mx + b

Step 2: Find out what value replaced 'm', that is the slope. Find out what value replaced 'b', that is the y-intercept.

9

Multiple Choice

What is the slope and y intercept in the equation:

y = 0.75x + 2

1

m = 2

b = 0.75

2

m = 0.75

b = 2

3

m = -0.75

b = -2

4

m = -2

b = -0.75

10

How to write the equation of a line:
  • Step 1: Find Slope (m)

  • Step 2: Find y intercept (b)

  • Step 3: Craft your equation
