Intro. to Sound
By Nicholas Carrillo
2
Sound is a Pressure (Longitudinal) Wave
Disturbances in media (air, water, rock, metal, etc.) produce pressure waves (sound)
Sound needs a medium to travel through, there's no sound in space because there is no medium for sound to travel through.

Speed of sound is based on temperature and density.
Speed of Sound is Constant for a given temperature and density.
Sound travels faster in denser media; speed of sound is ~5x faster in water, and 20x faster in steel than in air.

Multiple Choice
Why can sound not travel through space?
There is no medium for sound to travel through
There is sound in space, it is just too quiet to hear
The pressure is too low for sound to travel through.
The temperature is absolute zero in space.
5
Multiple Choice
Which medium does sound travel the fastest through?
Air
Water
Steel
6
Multiple Select
Which options describe what a sound wave is?
(Select all that apply)
Transverse
Longitudinal (Compression)
Pressure Wave
7
Speed of Sound = λ * f
The speed of sound is constant for a given medium and temperature.
Example: The speed of sound in air at 20°C is ~340 m/s

What is the wavelength of a 150 Hz sound wave at 20°C?
Speed of sound at 20°C is 340 m/s
Speed of Sound = Wavelength * Frequency
340 m/s = λ * 150Hz → λ = 340/150 → λ = 2.26 m
