Setelah mengetahui informasi kalahnya Jepang atas Sekutu dan menyerahnya Jepang kepada sekutu tanggal 14 Agustus, Golongan muda (Sutan sjahrir) segera merencanakan untuk menemui dan meminta Soekarno-Hatta untuk memproklamasikan Kemerdekaan Indonesia. Saat pertemuan tersebut Soekarno-Hatta menolak permintaan Golongan Muda dan akhirnya terjadilah peristiwa Rengas Dengklok yakni penculikan Soekarno-Hatta menuju Rengas Dengklok.
