•The genre of explaining is a fundamental language function for understanding the world and how it operates. The process of explaining is used to logically sequence the way that we and our environment physically function as well as understanding and interpreting why cultural and intellectual ideas and concepts prevail.

•For teachers, explaining is frequently used spoken genre. For students it is an essential genre for accumulating knowledge about the world, demonstrating that knowledge, and developing a capacity to question and critically assess information. It is clearly, therefore, a generic process integral to learning areas, from infants to the senior secondary years.
