Cells must move materials across its membrane to maintain homeostasis ("balance").

Some materials move from high-to-low concentration without energy; this is called passive transport. ​

Sometimes, however, materials must be moved from low to high concentration. This is called active transport.​

Active transport requires energy (ATP) to move materials against the concentration gradient.​

Active transport normally uses protein pumps.

These pumps allow for the movement of calcium, potassium, sodium, and other ions.​

At other times, the cell will​ use its cytoplasm to move materials inside or outside of the cell.

​These processes are called endocytosis (taking materials in the cell) & exocytosis (moving materials out of the cell).
