2
Learning Target
I can describe how active transport occurs across the cell membrane.
3
Lesson Guiding Question
How does active transport move molecules across the cell membrane?
4
Cell Transport Review
Remember...
Cells must move materials across its membrane to maintain homeostasis ("balance").
Some materials move from high-to-low concentration without energy; this is called passive transport.
Module 3B: Cell Transport & Processes
5
Active Transport
Remember...
Sometimes, however, materials must be moved from low to high concentration. This is called active transport.
Active transport requires energy (ATP) to move materials against the concentration gradient.
Module 3B: Cell Transport & Processes
6
Open Ended
Explain how passive transport and active transport are different.
7
Active Transport
Active transport normally uses protein pumps.
These pumps allow for the movement of calcium, potassium, sodium, and other ions.
Module 3B: Cell Transport & Processes
8
Active Transport
At other times, the cell will use its cytoplasm to move materials inside or outside of the cell.
These processes are called endocytosis (taking materials in the cell) & exocytosis (moving materials out of the cell).
Module 3B: Cell Transport & Processes
9
Multiple Choice
White blood cells surround damaged or foreign cells by surrounding and destryoing them in a process called phagocytosis. Is this an example of endocytosis or exocytosis?
endocytosis
exocytosis
